CoCreate: a shared virtual room for you and your AI companion

CoCreate is a live browser workspace where people and their AI companions work side by side — pods that behave like calls, group chat and DMs, and a companion that can actually do the work in front of you. In open beta at cocreate.sh.

CoCreate: a shared virtual room for you and your AI companion

Project Overview

CoCreate is a browser workspace built on a simple bet: an AI assistant is more useful when it sits beside you in the room rather than in a chat box off to the side. You sign in, land in a workspace, and join a pod — a live call with the people in it. Everyone keeps a companion: an AI agent that has its own panel, its own memory, and the ability to actually go and do things.

It is live in open beta at cocreate.sh.

What it does

  • Pods are calls. A pod is the session: join one and you are in it with video, audio and screen share. The lobby is always there, and anyone in the room who has not joined a pod yet shows up as Around.
  • Talk like a normal team. Group chat channels for the whole workspace, direct messages for one-to-one, and history that survives a reload because it lives in Postgres rather than in the tab.
  • A companion per person. You arrive as yourself; the companion beside you is its own participant with an editable persona and a memory it keeps.
  • A companion that works, not just answers. It can read a page, drive a browser while you watch, run things on a Linux computer of its own, keep several tabs straight, and hand a self-contained errand to a helper. When it gets genuinely stuck — a login, a captcha — it asks you, pauses, and picks up the moment you hand the keyboard back.
  • You can see the work. Every run has a trajectory: the steps it took, in order, with timing and cost, so the answer is never a black box you have to take on trust.
  • Installable. Add it to a home screen or a desktop and it opens as its own app with no browser chrome.

Technologies Used

  • Client: React 18 with Redux Toolkit, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind CSS
  • Realtime: Python 3.12 and FastAPI over native WebSockets for the room, with a managed WebRTC SFU and TURN for media, one session per pod
  • Data: Postgres for organisations, memberships, invites, channels, DMs and messages; Supabase Auth for accounts
  • Delivery: Docker and nginx (nginx-unprivileged, one published port), plus a manifest, a hand-written service worker and generated icons for the installable app

Results

CoCreate is in open beta with real people using it as a daily room rather than a demo: signing in, sitting in pods, chatting in channels, and giving their companions errands that get done and reported back step by step. The interesting outcome is not a benchmark — it is that the agent stops being a separate tab. You watch it work in the same window you are talking to your team in, and you can interrupt a run mid-way like you would interrupt a colleague.

I also built it the way I expect agents to be used: the product’s own development is driven through the same companion harness, so the thing got better by being used.

Notes

The mechanics behind the companions — how tasks are planned and executed, and how memory and context are managed between runs — are the part I keep to myself for now. The live product is open for anyone to try, and I am happy to walk through the design decisions in a conversation.
